SEASONS

Spring Summer Autumn Winter

Often, deciding when to go on holiday is less the issue than where - you're tied to school holidays or a special event or were simply the last to sign the office vacation roster. However, if you've got the luxury of choice, you'll find there are reasons to come to Il Riposo at any time of year.

Spring* opens a delicate umbrella of white and pale pink buds over the countryside.  By May, the hillsides are covered by a glorious array of wild flowers. Fields of red poppies and blue cornflowers line the roads, under limpid blue skies.  The days are warm enough for outside dining; fresh peas, young artichokes and asparagus (locally fresh and laughably cheap) fill the markets and are among the seasonal specialties.

Summer requires little explanation – lazy days, blue skies, sunbathing, siestas by the pool, and warm evenings for dining outside.

Market stalls overflow with summer fruits and vegetables – vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh greens, sweet red and yellow  peppers, and mouth-watering melons,  and strawberries.

Autumn's* amber tones create a suitable backdrop to the ripening vines and to the season's many harvest festivals celebrated in little villages throughout our area. Fresh truffles and porcini mushrooms that grow abundantly in the local area are now in season and feature prominently in a wide variety of antipasti, pastas and main courses, while hazelnuts, walnuts and chestnuts feature prominently in sweets and sauces.

While September can usually be mistaken for a summer month, by October the evenings may be cool enough to merit a log fire.

Winter's cool days are not without the opportunity to take a morning coffee outside in the sunshine.  When the snow falls, as it occasionally does, the landscape is transformed into a winter-wonderland; the distant mountains are capped in glistening white and the newly-fallen snow around the house is marked only with nocturnal deer tracks.  Wild boar, hare, venison and other game feature heavily on local restaurant menus.

*During all the months of spring and autumn, there is ample opportunity for enjoying meals outside.  The pool at Il Riposo is generally open from the 1st weekend in June until the end of September. Weather permitting, we may agree to requests to open the pool in May and to leave it open into October.
